Voice notes turned out to be the most natural way for people to share what they see — and the hardest format for newsrooms to use at scale.

Language is the whole story

More than half of the notes we received were in Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa or Igbo. Translation is not a nice-to-have.

The most useful notes arrived within an hour of an event. After a day, the value dropped sharply.

Contributors who heard back from an editor were three times more likely to send another report.
